Saturday Update: Home and Leamington Art Trail

This Saturday there is very little news so I’ll keep it brief for once. I rented a car last week which I used to get to the Twycross Zoo for the pre-wedding meet-up with Ben and Penny who are getting married in September this year. I managed to find the location perfectly fine  (I was a little nervous about that I’ll have you know) and the zoo looks like a nice place to photograph a happy occasion.

On the bank holiday Monday I took Sean, Andy and Cairine to Kenilworth Castle where we went to see the re-enactment show. Once again it was a lovely day with lots of sunshine, which was perfect for a picnic and some armour-clad combat, not by us fortunately!

The rest of the week had been pretty uneventful. I have written to several blogs Read more

Saturday update: Summer shootin’ !

This has been a good week no doubt for all of us who were lucky enough to take a few days off on the bank holidays to enjoy the great British weather, which, for a nice change, has been great indeed. My better half Sean, however, was not so lucky and had to do yet more overtime. And here I was looking forward to spending some time together ….

I managed to fill my week with some work in Warwick on the Monday, a woodlands themed vintage inspired photoshoot on the Wednesday with the lovely Morgan Lane, accompanied by Sophie Sear and her friend Matt. I met Sophie at the Warwickshire College when hosting a presentation about my work and seeing we have some similar photographic interests, suggested that we do shoot together.

Initially we were supposed to have two models on the shooting day, and as usual, I had put a casting call on Model Mayhem. I asked for a (somewhat)  experienced girl and an (absolute) beginner to make things interesting for all parties involved. We had a few responses, I selected two lovely looking girls and kept my fingers crossed. The first (beginning) girl was located in London and bailed out due to travel cost. To be honest I anticipated as much, I did clearly state the shoot would be TF* and no expenses would be covered – but most girls only see “Free Shoot” and not so much any any terms or conditions attached to it.

Morgan just happened to have gotten in touch with me on the Friday when we were going to ask another girl to take the ‘beginners’ place, which was a sheer stroke of luck. She seemed keen, was great in upkeep of communication (also a luxury amongst models every now and again) and arrived in timely fashion for the shoot. Something which could not be said for the experienced girl who didn’t get in touch for a few days, did not show up, and only sent me a message later in the day saying she wouldn’t come. Gee, really? What a surprise….

But on a positive note, we got all the sunshine we could have asked for on the day, everyone seemed to be getting along very well Read more

Saturday update: Online and auction saleroom fun!

Hello everyone! This week has been busy busy busy but well fun at the same time. The weather has had it’s ups and down but for some reason I can only remember the sunshine! I started my part-time job, got my photographer insurance in place, went to see a friend, went to an auction viewing, attended the Vintage Sale at the White Horse, took Cairine to the Leamington Auction house (she’s just moved to Leamington and never been to an auction) and sent lots of messages out to organise a shoot for the upcoming week.

On Monday, I started my little part-time job with my local art dealer – I helped him prepare a number of photographs from a Detroit newspaper archive to be sorted and photographed, before some would be mounted and sent on. Some of the images were truly remarkable, at least to my novice eyes. Stunning images covering the Vietnam protests, The D-Day landing of the Second World War, the African American Civil rights movements, Martin Luther King and Mohammed Ali. Other images in an album Read more

Saturday update: re-vamping the site

Hello again! My apologies for not being on the site as often as I’d like to be – the RSI is still bothering my arm and I’ve been using my time off to look into more wedding fayres, insurance, my end of year taxes, photographing on film and re-vamping the site (in progress). I know, I know – even THAT is sitting behind a PC but alas. I have little choice. Once I decide I need something changed, I will go ahead and do it! So please bear with me whilst I get my stuff sorted once again.

I have found a wedding Fayre in Wolverhampton at the Holiday Inn that wasn’t filled up to the brim with photographers. It’s a little out of the way but I’m sure it’ll be fiiiine. That will take place on the 5th of June. Read more

Saturday update: Coventry Art Fair and RSI

Hello again on this delightful Saturday.

Last Sunday I attended the Cov: Art Fair Spring edition 2011. Getting up early after the clock went a hour forward was hard, getting there by bus a bit of a struggle, carrying all my things with me uncomfortable and the cold in the morning quite unpleasant – but once I was there, all the people were lovely and the sun even came out around three o’ clock. I got quite a bit of interest in the portrait drawings, some even thinking they were just prints and in my photographs. I even sold a few things! Which is nice – seeing it wasn’t very busy at least I managed to cover the costs for the day.

I had a photoshoot with Sam Kapral at the Warwick University grounds, which was especially nice when the sun came out. We had a couple of slight set-backs: the location we chose turned out to be less than perfect for our sci-fi concept and the make-up artist we asked to join us was unfortunately not able to make it – but altogether I think we managed quite well with the make-up, considering we applied it standing in front of the toilet mirrors at the University.

I had also shot some frames on my TLR camera and the developed images look promising. I’ll be looking forward to printing them in the upcoming week.

On the bad news front, my right arm and shoulder in which I have had early stages Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) in 2005-2006 has slowly gone from stiff to stinging again. I do have to admit I have been spending a lot of time behind the PC lately, writing this blog being only one of the many things I want to do online. As a result, I will have to limit my blog to two or three times a week – aiming to cover a photographer and an artist, as well as the Saturday update.
